SXSW Picks – 3/15

by

It’s back! Another year of the massive music festival that is South By Southwest. South By for locals. Many locals do their best to avoid the craziness during SXSW, but of course being a music lover it is amazing to know that thousands of bands will be descending upon Austin for almost an entire week. It is always mind blowing and overwhelming for someone that loves music and wants to see a wide list of talented artists.

When planning your schedule for SXSW, it is never easy because you know you can only be in one place at one time when there are numerous great bands playing at the same time right across town. If you have a badge or wristband, you most likely will not have any issues except for the major headliners as those venues will reach capacity quickly. If you do not have a wristband, you can still experience the festival, you just have to be more strategic.

Just like last year, we will choose a cool day show, an evening showcase worth camping out for and then provide a myriad of bands to see if you like to take a chance and hop around from venue to venue. We really suggest bringing a bicycle if you will be hopping from place to place as traffic is insane and make sure and bring cash for parking if you do end up driving. If you do park, you will be charged upwards of $10-$40 to park somewhere as unfortunately everyone is looking to make a buck.

Day Show

Like we mentioned last year, the first day of the festival does not have a bunch of daytime activities to choose from. Casual Strangers’ day party wins which is at Guero’s Taco Bar.

EVENING SHOWCASE

Hype Hotel wins tonight with a nice smattering of rock on the line up for tonight.

Hype Hotel is located at 1100 East 5th Street.

These are bands we would see if we could travel around Austin easily. This works good for SXSWers with wristbands. If you do not have a wristband, avoid the major act shows, and the SXSW schedule page is pretty good at letting you know which shows you have to have a wristband or badge to enter.  The SXSW phone APP is great to download as well as you can filter for music showcases only.
