Vintage Vinyl – Guido Basso

Trumpeter and flugelhornist Guido Basso was born in Montreal in 1937, apprenticed in several dance bands as a young man, toured throughout North America with U.S. singers Vic Damone and Pearl Bailey and wound up settling in Toronto in 1960, where he became a highly in-demand studio musician and music director for radio and television programs. His name pops up on a lot of Canadian LPs throughout the ’60s and ’70s as a side man for artists like Peter Appleyard and Rob McConnell (not to mention McConnell’s Boss Brass), but he did record a handful of albums as a leader over the years, one of which, It’s Happening With Guido Basso (a Canadian Talent Library release), is the subject of today’s post.

The vast majority of It’s Happening With… consists of breezy instrumental covers of pop numbers like “Tequila” and “You Are My Sunshine,” but “Give Her My Love” (written by Basso) is an offbeat Middle Eastern-inflected dancefloor stomper with the title sung in English and the rest in a language I can’t identify.
