For those who like: Helium, Wild Flag, Sleater-Kinney.
In late 2013, Wild Flag and Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss stated in an interview that Wild Flag, an all-female supergroup containing members of Sleater-Kinney and Helium, had run its course. This led to speculation that Sleater-Kinney is heading towards a full reunion. Former Helium member Mary Timony may have been lost in the shuffle, but yesterday she announced her next project, Ex Hex will release a 7” single, “Hot and Cold” on March 18th.
The Washington D.C. based Ex Hex are Mary Timony of Helium and Wild Flag on vocals and guitar, Betsy Wright of The Fire Tapes on bass, and Laura Harris of Aquarium on drums. Taking their name from Timony’s 2005 solo album, Ex Hex, Ex Hex, the band, have been together since 2013, and have played a few shows including CMJ in New York. The sound Ex Hex create on “Hot and Cold” will be familiar to those who have followed Timony’s work in Helium or Wild Flag. It does lean a bit more towards Wild Flag, it’s poppy, and features some punk-ish distorted guitar work. The single was mixed by Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty.
The single will have two b-sides, “Waterfall” and “Everywhere”. I’m excited to hear those, as “Hot and Cold” is a great catchy song, and I hope this leads to a full album in 2014. They have announced a few dates, which you can see on their website, here.
