Last week, Northern California native Jesca Hoop released her latest project, Undress. Hoop has been releasing music for while now, her first LP, Kismet released in 2007. Like the title suggests, Undress features songs that are stripped down musically, mostly just to guitar. All of the songs on Undress were on Hoop’s 2009 album Hunting My Dress.
Hoop’s has drawn attention from many famous musicians throughout the years. Some of those musicians include Andrew Bird, Peter Gabriel, Punch Brothers, Elbow, and Tom Waits. Tom Waits, whom Hoop worked for as a nanny, referred to her music “like going swimming in a lake at night.” Elbow’s Guy Garvey guests on Hoop’s Undress, singing on “Murder of Birds”. Also appearing on the album are Willy Mason, Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) and Erika Wennerstrom (Heartless Bastards).
The stripped-down feel of Undress makes some of the unrealized beauty of these songs really come out. The harmonies Hoop does on this record are incredible, paired with the bare minimal instrumentation. Some of the songs on Hunting My Dress had some electronic elements, bass, drums, and even some sound effects, and while Hunting My Dress is a great album, the intimacy that the Undress versions of these songs bring breathe these songs new life.
Jesca Hoop is touring with Shearwater and will be in New York at The Bell House on March 20th, Montreal on March 26 at Le Divan Orange, and Toronto at The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern on March 27
