Most of the songs on this 1975 LP by the late Toronto-based tenor saxophonist and flautist Eugene Amaro (who led his own jazz combos and often sat in with The Boss Brass in addition to playing with visiting musicians like Woody Herman and Benny Goodman) are cloying easy-listening numbers that sound like music you’d wait for the dentist to, but this funky cover of the Marvin Gaye classic “What’s Goin’ On” is the happy exception.

Accompanied by Canadian Talent Library mainstays The Laurie Bower Singers, Amaro and the session musicians accompanying him (not identified in the liner notes, unfortunately) cook up a silky-smooth groove that wouldn’t sound out of place on one of CTI‘s soul-jazz classics.
