There’s something to be said for artists who take something that’s been done and turn it on its head. BlakDenim, a hip hop band out of Ottawa, is the perfect example of this. While maintaining the tight lyricism and sharp wordplay of many traditional rappers, BlakDenim ups the ante with a vast sound and an orchestra’s worth of instruments (including trumpet, tuba, congas, cello and flute).

A second place winner in the Live 88.5 Big Money Shot contest, BlakDenim brings over the top energy to their live shows which are combination of Precise Kenny Creole’s on point rapping, the bands almost improvisational sound (reminiscent of jazz fusion) and soulful singing. They are truly worth seeing and should be one of the hip hop highlights of Bluesfest.

You can check out BlakDenim rocking the Black Sheep stage at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 5.
