I discovered Serena Ryder soon after her release of If Your Memory Serves You Well. My full blown live music addiction didn’t start until 2009 or so which also coincided with her break for a few years. I did manage to catch her opening for Melissa Etheridge and her performance at the 2011 Folkfest. By the time her next album came out she was no longer playing small venues. Now I lament never having the opportunity of seeing her play somewhere intimate like the Black Sheep Inn, I am sure she would have been fantastic. However, this is my loss, not Serena Ryder’s. Her fame has grown quickly in the last few years and now she is playing bigger venues and even headlined September 11th at the 2014 Ottawa Folk Festival.

I have now seen her play live four times and every show has been fantastic. Serena Ryder is one of those artists that truly appears to love being on stage and performing for the audience. She feel very authentic in her interactions with the crowd and her voice is every bit as strong in person as it is on her albums.
