After lighting up, Leo is curtly asked if he could smoke outside. He responds innocently with, “outside, inside, wherever”. That kind of smarmy yet light-hearted attitude is the key behind Mika Kaurismaki’s latest road trip adventure.
Road North is a simple, estranged father meets reluctant son, vehicle that rides on the infectious buoyoncy of charming criminal Leo as he takes his very stiff, concert pianist son on the journey of his life. Discoveries are made, lessons are learned, and bonds established. Kaurismaki’s gift is bringing the audience along for the surprise roller-coaster.
A great heart-warming adventure; a perfect foil for a cold, grey November.
