One of our favourite Hidden Gems of 2015 was Sumeau, whose psych-pop was overshadowed by the plethora of mainstream and indie music coming out of Los Angeles. To kick off 2015, we head back to the City of Angels for our first Hidden Gem of the year (at least in terms of an actual band) – Susan.
Unlike Sumeau, Susan are three women who make fun, catchy, hook-filled garage-punk-pop. Formed in 2012, the band makes music that blares with early Dum Dum Girls, Toronto’s The Beaches, and touches of the legendary Liz Phair and Elastica. Last fall, they released their debut 7″, Just Call It, which includes three awesome tracks – the title track, “Frenchie”, and “Pancake”. The 7″ was released on vinyl via Volar Records and limited edition cassettes were made available on Burger Records.
Susan comprises of Jessica Owen on guitar, Beth B. on bass, and Katie Fern on drums. All three share the vocal duties. You can hear the 7″ below and purchase it on Bandcamp, iTunes, Amazon, and eMusic.
Can’t wait for their next release, which hopefully will be later this year.
