Scandinavian indie folk duo Brother North released their self-titled debut last April to great acclaim in their native Sweden, though they have been making music together for over a decade. Freyr Flodgren and Lucas Enquist, both in their early 20s, are childhood friends who formed the group in 2012.
Featuring delicate acoustic guitar accentuated by cello and piano, the pair deliver a brief yet beautiful collection of atmospheric melodies. The album takes the listener on an intimate, 29-minute journey with eight songs that feel like the gentle caress of soft sunlight. This is a tranquil album that conjures the smell of summer, the feel of wet grass and fresh air.
The influence of Sigur Rós is evident in the tracks “Silent Mind” and “Krummi” (the only track sung in Icelandic) while the crescendo of orchestral strings in “Pool of Her” draw comparisons to Damien Rice.
Brother North may reside in the northern cold of Sweden, but their music inhabits a sunny soundscape that is peacefully warming. And it is startling that they remain unsigned, but possibly not for long.
