In the ’80s, there was an artist named Terence Trent D’Arby, who now goes by the name Sananda Francesco Maitreya, whose music appealed to a wide range of music fans with his combination of R&B, soul, and funk. His music was smooth and catchy and lacked the sappiness and cheesiness of the era. Last year, London-based band Childhood arrived on the scene with a similar sound, but adding additional layers to create a fuller sound. This year, Remi Miles is taking this great blend of genres and making it even more expansive.

Last month, the Brighton, UK-based Miles released his debut EP, Under Light Symphonies. The four-track album has an ’80s aesthetics, but adding Afro-beat textures and modern-day, indie-pop, notably synth, elements. The EP, as a whole, has a timeless quality to it, transporting one back to even the ’70s-era R&B.

The title track is a body swaying, coming-of-age song that would fit right in with any ’80s soundtrack. “Something” is a song that resonates the most of Terence Trent D’Arby with the cool R&B and soul vibes and the theme of love and affection. Guys in a new relationship should put this track on a mixtape for the one they love.

“I Want You”, which was the lead single released back in November, has an R&B-pop feel and the theme to match – the euphoria one feels when they’ve fallen in love. “Riveria Girl” is a terrific song. It differs from the previous three tracks as it is a more mellow track that uses lush melodies and multiple layers to create a relaxing atmosphere. The song creates the feeling that one is driving along the coast in a convertible, top down of course, and having the air blowing through one’s hair. Musically, it is recreating that feeling when we fall in love – where nothing can go wrong and everything is as warm and clear as a cloudless sky.

Remi Miles is reportedly at work on producing new material. Whether that will be another EP or possibly a debut full-length remains to be seen. If it builds on the successful Under Light Symphonies, then we could be in store for one of the best albums of 2015.

Under Light Symphonies is available at iTunes, Amazon, and eMusic. Watch the video for “I Want You” below, and all four tracks from the EP are also below.
