This Sunday is Mother’s Day, and what better way to celebrate than with some of our mothers’ favorite songs! We asked some mothers to tell us their favorite songs, and the responses were awesome, ranging from the sad songs of The National to Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved”.
June (2 kitties) – Bob Marley, “Could You Be Loved”
It’s not my favorite song, although I like it very much. For some reasons my cats like it when I sing it, especially if I’m holding them or they are perched on me at the time. Crazy Rastafarian kitties….
Patricia (1 child) – Adele, “Chasing Pavements”
When my daughter was around 5 or 6, this song came out. I had a recording of it from a performance (on SNL I think). We would play that song over and over and dance around singing and being silly.
Sarah (2 children) – John Denver, “Country Roads”
Because it talks about home and how much you miss it when you’re gone.
Christina (1 child) – Randy Newman, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”
Sang it to my son every night when he was little and hooked on Toy Story, and I still sing it to him now…. much to his embarrassment. Now he is nearly 20!!
Beth (3 children) – Eric Clapton, “Lay Down Sally”
When my kids were babies, I sang it to them to get them to sit still while I changed their diapers and when they needed to settle down for a nap. Now that my kids are teenagers, I miss those days.
Celine (2 children) – Daniel Powter, “Bad Day”
I don’t really have a favourite song. I love many songs, which remind me of different events or different people in my life. But recently I heard “Bad Day” by Daniel Powter, and it’s a song that makes me feel happy, it makes me want to roll down my car windows and sing as loud as possible!
Julie (3 children) – Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell, “You Are My Sunshine”
When I think about my kids, I think about “You Are My Sunshine” because we used to sing it together all the time when they were little. AND when they were little, we used to sing together all the time so it reminds me of how cute and happy they were when they were little. Now they’re teenagers and are grumpier and get pissy if I sing. Ha!!!
Katie (2 kitties) – The National, “About Today”, and Royal Wood, “I’m So Glad”
Well like a mother being asked to pick her favourite child, I cannot pick just one song. But I’ll tell you the first two that came to mind: “About Today” by The National (in particular, the live version on the Virginia EP), and “I’m So Glad” by Royal Wood. Both are simple songs. The first is about losing someone close to you, and the second is about finding love. I could listen to each on an endless loop all day…
Delisa (1 child) – James Taylor, “How Sweet It Is”
I used to sing this to Aren when he was a toddler. He’d be in his high chair, and I’d be making lunch and singing. Aren would giggle away! Probably because my singing was so terrible!
Bethany (1 child) – Bill Withers, “Lovely Day”
I don’t really have favorite song. I mean it changes daily! But this song is how I feel about my kid. Everyday I put it on in the car when we drive to school because I want him to know that all I have to do is look at him and seeing him makes everything alright, and I hope I do to same for him. We usually sing it at the top of our lungs together!
Leanne (2 children) – Joni Mitchell, “Both Sides Now”
The lesson all people learn upon becoming parents: we really don’t know the answers and that there never is one answer to anything. I think Joni hits that feeling of gaining some life experience and then realizing that one is never going to be perfect at any of this life stuff.
