Back in March, Ben had the opportunity to speak with Isley Reust in a really in-depth interview. The discussion brought to our attention Isley’s band Spectacular Spectacular, and that they would be releasing a new album this year. The trio based out of San Francisco released a song last fall, the Garbage-esque “Orange Juice”, and they’ve now returned with single number 2, “Saturday Night”. (dream-pop, punk-rock).
The latest track is really two tracks in one. It starts off with lush dream-pop between transitioning into a wild, punk-rock blitz a la Joanna Gruesome and then ebbing back to Mazzy Starr-esque dream-pop. What’s really impressive of the song is that Spectacular Spectacular seamlessly move between the genres. The sound is perfect for the song’s title, where a Saturday night can be a roller coaster ride of events and emotions.
Spectacular Spectacular are Isley Reust, Jessica De Grasse, and Millie Chan. Their new album, Blur, comes out June 30th. The band will be touring the western sections of the US and Canada. Dates are below.
Hear “Saturday Night” on the June 12th edition of The Weekend Showcase, a weekly playlist featuring new music from around the world. It’s a playlist made for spinning all weekend.
