We’re slowly getting things back in order after a few weeks of festivals and non-music related deadlines. Sleep, as a result, has become a luxury. But so has finding great music. Here is The Matinee July 28th Edition, featuring six new singles to start your Tuesday.

Big Smoke – “Lately”

We kick things off with a young band from Melbourne, Australia creating some buzz Down Under. Getting set to release their debut EP, Lately, Big Smoke have recently released the title track. It’s a fantastic indie-rock song, whose mid-tempo approach perfectly complements the painful emotions of losing someone. And if you listen closely, the song echoes of Dan Boeckner’s work with Wolf Parade. Even frontman Adrian Slattery’s vocals resemble the Canadian singer-songwriter’s voice (if there was a dashing of synth, it could be a Handsome Furs or Operators tune). If the single is a sign of things to come on their EP, then Lately could be one of the sleeper hits of 2015.

Big Smoke are Adrian Slattery, Luke Brennan, Alex O’Gorman, and Tim Baker. Lately will be released later this year via First Love, an independent record label based out of Melbourne and London, UK.

NŌVA – “More”

From Montreal comes 19-year old singer-songwriter NŌVA. Last week, she released her debut single, “More”. It’s an electro-pop song that oozes with the style of Banks and Zola Jesus. Her songwriting, though is well beyond that of a teenager. While she focuses on her own personal experiences and there’s a youthful element to the story being described, NŌVA doesn’t depend on silly lyrics or childish wordplay to get her point across. Instead, she uses some clever allegory to describe how being caught in certain experiences can feel like being entrapped. It’s extremely refreshing to hear a young artist apply creativity and imagination to her craft.

NŌVA’s debut EP is expected out later this year. Follow her on social media to get the latest news. In the meantime, purchase her single on iTunes.

Fuzz – “Rat Race”

We’re past the halfway mark of the calendar year, which can only mean one thing – Ty Segall is back with some new music. This time, he’s teamed up once again with his mates Charles Moothart and Roland Cosio to release the second album under Fuzz. Still psychedelic and plenty of garage rock, Fuzz, if you don’t already know, sees the multi-talented Segall positioned behind the drum kit while sharing the vocal chorses with both Moothart and Cosio. On “Rat Race”, one of two tracks released in advance of the forthcoming new album, II, Moothart takes control. This spectacular, blistering rock song has Moothart channeling his inner Black Sabbath-era Ozzie Osborne while the tune has the anthemic, arena rock sound of Black Mountain. This has epic potential as a live track.

The other single released for II is the psychedelic rocker “Pollinate”, which Segall sings the lead. You can find it here.

II will be released on October 23 via In The Red Records. It will be a double LP, which might represent something different in terms of magnitude for Segall although last year he released the 17-song masterpiece, Manipulator.

Here We Go Magic – “Falling”

Last week, I was listening to a track by Here We Go Magic, and I was wondering when they would release something new. It has been three years since their last album, A Different Ship, so they are due for an album. Lo and behold, late last week they announced they will be releasing Be Small on October 16 via Secretly Canadian. The Brooklyn-based band has always had a playful style to their music, although it was more abstract and even quirky. However, on the first single from the new album, “Falling”, the band has created a pop-rock tune that is a little bit more accessible and upbeat. It’s also more harmonic. The change, though, works. There’s still a quirky side (the light wail of a synthesizer in the background and the abrupt ending, for instance), so it’s not as if Here We Go Magic have completely abandoned their past sound. Instead, they’ve folded it into a track that is fun, danceable, and even a touch zany.

Sally Crewe – “Later Than You Think”

There are so many artists where you think, “How come they’re not more popular?” Sally Crewe falls into this category.

Before Waxahatchee, Sarah Bethe Nelson, and Aly Spaltro (a.k.a. Lady Lamb) were sharing their poetic and brilliant lyrics, Crewe had already released a handful of albums, beginning with 2003’s Drive It Like You Stole It. Her rock ‘n roll style is a bit of a mash up of Veruca Salt, a melodic version of Sleater-Kinney, and the aforementioned Katie Crutchfield, which is revealed on her latest single, “Later Than You Think”. The title track of her forthcoming album, “Later Than You Think” showcases the mature and poignant songwriting of the Austin-based singer-songwriter. There’s no beating around the bush on the single, one where Crewe reflects back on a troubled relationship but one worthy of maintaining. It’s an experience that many can relate to.

Later Than You Think will be released on September 22 via 8 Track Mind!

The Ghost of Helags – “1000 Voices (ft. Chloe)”

We don’t post much electronic music, but when we do it leans more to the ambient and ethereal sides. It’s music that moves you emotionally or even spiritually instead of completely blowing you out of the water with heavy beats, over dubs, and synths. Swedish producer John Alexander Ericson – who goes by the moniker The Ghost of Helag – is one artist who is quietly making a name for himself with his lush, ethereal style, following in the footsteps of M83.

Ericson is in the final stages of mastering his debut album (via Warsaw Recordings), and the latest single from the album is “1000 Voices”. Featuring the haunting but gorgeous vocals of Berlin-based singer Chloe that are complemented by the subtly placed beats and dubs of Ericson, “1000 Voices” is spatial, romantic, and engrossing, and it’ll leave you in a splendid daze.
