The Matinee November 13 has 6 new awesome tracks to share today. It’s a great playlist to kick off the weekend. We have a couple of tracks from the UK, USA and Germany by way of Sag Harbor. Don’t forget to check back tomorrow for our entire week’s playlist.
ACTOR – “Uppercut” (Leeds, UK)
We have been completely enamored by Louisa Osborn, aka ACTOR. We are super excited to share her new track “Uppercut”. The Leeds based artist is very talented at mixing beautiful vocals with meaningful lyrics. Ben likened her to Lordes, Daughter, and Lana Del Rey. Osborn says the song “was inspired by a Billie Holiday lyric ‘I’d rather be lonely than happy with somebody else’. “Uppercut” personifies the ugly punch you willingly have to take when you have to give someone up.”
Aloric – “Grace” (London, UK)
We were quite mesmerized by the debut track from Aloric, and the follow up “Grace” brings even more allure around this mysterious band from London. We don’t even notice this track is 7 minutes long because it completely envelopes you and you still don’t want it to end. While the debut track reminded a bit of Rhye in terms of vocals, this one is a mix between Jeff Buckley and Thom Yorke. The track is a complete homage to Buckley, an amazing talent that was gone too soon. Aloric shares a bit about the motivation behind the track, and we love it even more.
‘Grace’ is a tribute to the late-great, Jeff Buckley. The song is written from Jeff’s perspective, specifically when he was 8 years old and his mother took him to meet his estranged musician father Tim Buckley, for the first and only time. Jeff said of the time, that his father didn’t really talk to him and just stayed in the studio for the few days. It’s the story of absence and rejection, and a metaphor than can resonate with a lot of people. – Aloric
You can check out the full lyrics over on Aloric’s bandcamp page.
Cheat Codes – “Follow You” (Los Angeles, USA)
We have previously shared some great tracks by Cheat Codes, and they are back with “Follow You”. The LA based trio have created another awesome upbeat synth pop tune that you can’t help listening to more than once. Cheat Codes are Matthew Russell, Trevor Dahl and Kevin Ford. We can’t wait for the next track, as they are awesome at numerous collaborations with other talented artists (Dresses and Lostboycrow just to name a few).
Sara Hartman – “Monster Lead Me Home” (Berlin, Germany)
We are sharing the debut track by Sara Hartman titled “Monster Lead Me Home”. Hartman was born in Sag Harbor and made the move to become a Berlin resident where “Monster Lead Me Home” was born. Hartman shares “It’s a snapshot of my mind when I first got to Berlin. It was really exciting but very frightening at the same time.” The track is upbeat and danceable yet has that serious tone in the lyrics. The young and emerging artist is putting the finishing touches on her debut album and will also be supporting MS MR in Germany this month. We look forward to hearing more from this emerging artist.
Weekender – “Floaty Feeling, Blue” (Philadelphia, USA)
Weekender is evolving to become the perfect mix of psych and shoegaze. The newest track “Floaty Feeling, Blue” is also the name of their upcoming sophomore EP which will be released January 15th on PaperCup Music. The Philadelphia-based band has become a favorite to support touring artists including Future Islands, The Growlers, Nothing and Peace just to name a few. Weekender is comprised of Derek Sheehan, Jesse Petas, Steven Rosplock, Brendan McGeehan and Dan Mudd. We look forward to hearing more new material from this talented band.
The Wild Wild – “Sing” (Santa Cruz, USA)
The Wild Wild is the brainchild of Benjamin Dunn who writes, plays and records all of the music on his own. He has been described as a mix between Friendly Fires, MGMT and Walk The Moon. We just think he is creating super awesome indie pop that is familiar yet comfortable, something you want to take with you and listen everywhere you go. Benjamin Dunn is originally from Illinois and escaped to California where is his now based in Santa Cruz. “Sing” will be off of his debut LP which will be released January 22, 2016 via Embassy of Music.
