The Matinee December 15 edition takes a different spin from The Melodic Tonic. The songs below aren’t meant to ease the soul but rather to ignite the flame inside each and every one of you. Hear some new singles from really young artists to veterans who are about to breakthrough. The tracks, as always, span a number of countries with Sweden, the UK, The Netherlands, Australia, and the US represented.

Agent blå – “Strand” (Gothenburg, Sweden)

Agent blå - Strand

The new bands keep getting younger and younger, but so many of these new bands sound like veterans. The latest teenage sensations are Agent blå, an indie-rock quintet from Gothenburg, Sweden. Their debut single, “Strand”, is a dark, delirious driving tune that beckons to a time when music was intended to move and be heard. Think UK-French band Savages meets Pat Benatar.

“Strand” was released last week in Sweden as a limited 7” single. Pick it up on the band’s Bandcamp page. This young group have signed with Swedish label Luxury Records.

Agent blå are Lucas Gustavsson, Emelie Alatalo, Felix Skörvald, Josefine Täck, and Arvid Christensen. Their ages range between 16 and 18.

The Castillians – “Piggy In The Middle” (Birmingham, UK)

The Castillians - Piggy In The Middle

Rambunctious and fun, two words to describe “Piggy In The Middle”, the blistering rock ‘n roll single by UK trio The Castillians. The track is 3 minutes and 10 seconds of cosmic energy. The catchy guitar riffs, the blaring saxophone, and the feverish pace of the rhythm section channel a sound when leather jackets, white T-shirts, and greased-up hair were in style. Spin the track and you might think of James Dean (or Arthur Herbert Fonzarelli – a.k.a. Fonzie).

The Castillians are Matt Castillian, Dan Castillian and Bobby Pockets. “Piggy In The Middle” is the second single from the trios’ forthcoming, second full-length, You & Me. The LP is expected February 12th via PNKSLM Recordings.

Doug Tuttle – “Falling To Believe” (Rochester, NH, USA)

Doug Tuttle - "Falling To Believe"

Lots of people are searching for a band or an artist who could recreate the perfection The War on Drugs created on 2014’s seminal Lost In The Dream. The new single from Doug Tuttle comes awfully close. “Falling To Believe” is a tidal wave of sound, stunningly mixing folk-rock with psych-pop. It’s dreamy and lush due to Tuttle’s warm voice. Yet the track is quietly cathartic with the terrific guitar work. You would be forgiven if you hit repeat on the song time and time again.

“Falling To Believe” is the lead single from Tuttle’s second album It Calls On Me. The LP drops February 19, 2016 via Trouble In Mind Records.

Eerie Wanda – “I Am Over Here” (Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

Eerie Wanda - I Am Over Here Eerie Wanda, the project of Marina Tadic, is back with another great track. Earlier this fall, she shared “Volcano Lagoon”, a fantastic lo-fi, alt-country-rock tune. Her latest single, “I Am Over Here”, is another lo-fi track that leans more towards melodic psychedelic-pop with a touch of surf-pop. This splendid, gorgeous track recalls the excellence of The Vaseline and West Coast darlings Jessie Jones and Pearl Charles.

This is the latest single from Eerie Wanda’s forthcoming, debut album, Hum. The LP comes out February 26, 2016 via Beyond Beyond is Beyond. Pre-order it over here.

Golden Dawn Arkestra – “STARGAZER” (Saturn, TX, USA)

Golden Dawn Arkestra - Stargazer

Wow! Not sure much more needs to be said about “STARGAZER”. This stellar, cosmic track by Golden Dawn Arkestra brilliantly melds together late ’60s psychedelic pop, Afro-beat, and acid jazz into one cataclysmic track. “STARGAZER” is a song with origins from a completely different era – heck, from a different galaxy! The innovation behind the track is unmatched.

Golden Dawn Arkestra is a collective of musicians from Texas, but it was founded by Zapot Mgwana – an American of Ethiopian ancestry.

The Gooch Palms – “Tiny Insight” (Los Angeles, USA via Newcastle, Australia)

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/234111703″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”133″ iframe=”true” /]

The Gooch Palms - TINY INSIGHT From their days in Newcastle, Australia to now their base in Los Angeles, Leroy Maqueen and Kat Friend – a.k.a. The Gooch Palms – have been known as a party band. The two create fun and infectious garage-pop, telling stories of the everyday and sometimes the maniacal aspects of life. It’s not surprising, as such, that Burger Records signed the band and released their debut album a few years ago.

For their second album, The Gooch Palms have opted to self-release it. The lead single is “Tiny Insight”, which is more melodic than their past tracks. However, the song is still fun, entertaining, and even a little silly. But that’s what makes The Gooch Palms great. If Mac DeMarco made garage-pop, it probably would sound like this.

“Tiny Insight” is the first single from the band’s forthcoming, new album, Introverted Extroverts. It drops June 15, 2016 via their own label, Summer Camp Records.
