The Matinee January 13th Edition provides a nice mix of indie rock, indie pop, synth pop and straight up rock. The playlist for the most part is upbeat and hopefully will put you in a good mood for this humpday. We have tracks from the US, London, Belgium and Australia.
Aaron Taos – “Hands” (Brooklyn, USA)
Aaron Taos is a Brooklyn based artist blurring genres in the indie space. He has a mix of nostalgia that brings in old school hip hop, a bit of a surf rock vibe and off beat folk in his debut EP. Aaron Taos has the potential to break out in a big way this year.
With over 80k soundcloud plays for “Hands” and actually a Sofar gig in New York City tonight, it’s only a matter of time before more people are exposed to his talent. “Hands” is an awesome track which combines his velvety voice with a few samples, beats and memorable guitar riffs. You can pick up his EP, Guits which can be heard in full here.
Dyer St. – “Nostalgia” (Dallas, USA)
Dyer St. are from Dallas and they are a progressive pop band with awesome 90s rock vibes woven throughout their debut EP, 5500. At first listen you might think this band is just like any other emerging indie rock band but all of the members ages range from 14 to 16. The quintet is comprised of Sophie Rapattoni (vocals) , Landon Headstrom (guitar), Gabe Garcia (guitar), Dante Zatto (bass), and Seth Simonds (drums). They each met while attending School of Rock in Dallas and have only been performing live for less than a year. It was hard to choose a favorite song off of their 4 track EP as they are all solid singles (“Catastrophe” was a close second). “Nostalgia” provides unique timing throughout and stand out guitar against Rapattoni’s sweet yet strong vocals.
FADES – “Breaking Through the Walls” (London, UK)
FADES are a solid dose of rock. The quintet from London have released “Breaking Through Walls” which is off of their upcoming self titled EP. The single drops January 29th and we are happy to share it. If you dig bands like Arctic Monkeys or QOTSA, FADES will be right up your alley. “Breaking Through Walls” holds your attention with Joshua Woo’s versatile vocals and the stellar guitar solos throughout.
FADES are Joshua Woo (Vocals/Guitar), Alessandro Melchior (Guitar/Keyboards), Lucas Mendes (Lead Guitar), James Dibble (Bass Guitar) and Keir Adamson (Drums). Their self-titled, debut EP drops March 11th. Stay tuned for more from this up and coming rock band.
Team William – “Poets” (Ghent, Belgium)
We don’t know much about Team William because we can’t read their Facebook page. All we know is that their track “Poets” is stuck in our head. With killer hooks and a chorus that keeps your toes tapping, we couldn’t help but share this track from this Belgian band.
The track is pretty much indie-pop perfected and they have 3 other addicting singles included on their most recent EP.
“Poets” is taken from their sophomore album, Drama, which can be heard in its entirety on SoundCloud.
The Teen Age – “Backwards” (Brooklyn, USA)
“Backwards” is the lead single from The Teen Age’s forthcoming EP, Bad Seed, which is due out March 4th via PaperCup Music. The track almost has some early 80s new wave undertones but with a solid dose of indie pop which includes a very addicting chorus. The track is a love song of sorts with lyrics that speak to that relationship where you truly love someone, but you can’t help from making the wrong decisions. The lyrics mention the struggle to do the right thing with “the devil sleeps beside me, he looks like my brother but he’s hungrier. He always said I’d amount to nothing.”
The Teen Age are Digo, Micah, Bill, and Ben. We expect to hear more awesome tunes from this emerging quartet out of Brooklyn.
Them Swoops – “Into The Atmosphere” (Melbourne, Australia)
Them Swoops have been making awesome tunes since 2012 when they had success with the track “Work Around It” which received play on Sirius XM’s Alt Nation. They then released their EP Glimmers which received numerous kudos from the blogosphere. Them Swoops was formed by key members Dave McGann and Chris Goff.
They are now back with a new track titled “Into The Atmosphere” which is dripping with synth pop goodness and will definitely stick with you long after first listen. The track will be released this Friday and we will be hearing more from Them Swoops in 2016.
