Sunbathers EP Review + Q&A

by

Today we have a review of Sunbathers’ self titled debut EP. We shared their track Intimacy at the end of November and became immediate fans.

The Baltimore/DC Based band is comprised of Sean Lynott (Vocals/Synth) Peter Mindnich (Guitar/Vocals) Tim Boate (Guitar) Sean Oliver (Bass), and Shohsei Oda (Drums).

Their five track EP is a solid showing of their talent for creating perfectly constructed anthemic tracks that keep you wanting to hear more. “Intimacy” has that perfect indie pop vibe and vocalist Sean Lynott has the falsetto to melt fangirl’s hearts. “Glory” is a bit more of a guitar driven track that flexes their indie rock muscles. “Summer In The City” is a fast paced feel good rock track, which will be a perfect addition to any upcoming summer playlist. “Daisy” is another solid indie rock love song with memorable guitar riffs. “All Your Lovely Colors” closes out the EP which slows it down a bit before rising back into another great chorus driven indie rock track with nice reverb and guitar work toward the end. All in all their debut EP is pretty awesome and is actually available for free on Soundcloud and BandCamp. We look forward to hearing more from Sunbathers in the future, these guys should be on your “one to watch” list.

Here is a quick Q&A while you take a listen to the EP. (Answers by guitarist Tim)

I hear a band that sounds very mature, how long have you all been playing together?
Our singer Sean Lynott and I have been playing music together since senior year of college (2012). Sunbathers, with our current 5 member lineup, have been playing together since we formed in the Fall of 2013 while living in DC, and performed our first show 12/31/13. Since then we’ve been writing music, recording, and playing shows primarily in the DC/Baltimore area. We released a couple singles earlier in 2015, and then our debut self-titled EP in November. The EP is available for free download on our SoundCloud & BandCamp pages, and streaming on all other digital platforms.

You guys released your EP last year, got some good blog coverage and even radio play, what is in store this year for Sunbathers?

We’re starting pre-production this weekend for a new single, which we hope to release in the next month or two. We plan to continue recording throughout 2016, ideally to have a full second EP out before the end of the year. Also looking to start playing shows in some new cities, likely Philadelphia and NYC, and we are in the early phases of working on a music video for one of our songs.

Some pretty cool bands have been coming out of DC lately – has the local music scene been supportive?

DC is where we got our start, and played our first several shows. The local scene has definitely been supportive, and we’ve really enjoyed playing with some great local DC bands. Baltimore has been kind to us as well, as we’ve started to play a few more shows there recently. Our next show is 1/29/16 at Metro Gallery in Baltimore with Yo No Say (Baltimore) and Color Palette (DC).

How does your songwriting process go – is it collaborative or does each person have a certain role?

Our songwriting process is very collaborative. We all come from different musical backgrounds and collectively have a wide range of influences. Typically one member of the band brings an idea to the rest, and then we workshop it, with each member bringing their own personality to the overall vibe. Our singer Sean then writes most of the lyrics once we have the instrumental parts worked out.

Are you guys looking forward to any of your favorite artists releasing a new album this year?
Absolutely, there are some great records supposed to be coming out this year. Some that we’re looking forward to are Radiohead, Frank Ocean, The 1975, Kanye West, Wild Nothing, Savages, Chromatics, David Bowie, DIIV, Sky Ferreira and hopefully My Morning Jacket.
