If you have ever needed a song to lift you up and focus you on achieving your dreams, you just found it in Michael Burk’s “Beyond the Horizon”.

When I first heard this song blasting across my living room I assumed it was from a piece of musical theatre, but my inner musical theatre geek was getting the better of me. Although Michael has been making music for many years, there isn’t a hint of show tunes in his biography – his songs are great pieces of music in their own right.

Michael’s strong vocal, simple arrangements and the feel for the ocean that haunts the lyrics, combined with the upbeat tempo are reminiscent of Jimmy Buffet’s early work. Parrotheads across the world take note – this is definitely a tune worth adding to your playlist.

I didn’t have to get my world atlas out to know that Biloxi, Mississippi, where Michael calls home, isn’t in the Caribbean, but a quick exploration of his back catalogue reveals a selection of compositions that cry out to be heard on a beach, or from the deck of a yacht. It’s no surprise to find that Michael spent his teenage years living aboard his father’s sailboat – this is music that puts the smell of salt air in your nostrils!
