Getting one’s music heard is becoming an even more difficult task, as hundreds of new bands, collectives, and artists enter into the fray each day. Once upon a time, creating great new music was the key, but now more and more acts are covering songs by well-known artists in order to be heard. Not all covers are treated equal, which is why we only feature covers that astound us, that blow us away.

And this is exactly what FRAUDS have done with their debut single, a cover of Foals’ “Spanish Sahara”. The trio from Paris have completely transformed the Oxford band’s classic, indie-rock tune (which was also from their debut album) into an electro-pop gem. The cover is darker and denser, as duo producers Anthony Parachutes and Stan Faire add gorgeous synths to give the song an ethereal and haunting quality. It is the sultry vocals of Anaïs Mroz, however, that take the song into the stratosphere. Together, the trio’s work results in something truly mesmerizing and brilliant, and dare we say a cover that is better than the original.

FRAUDS have been together since 2014 and have produced their own original work, but “Spanish Sahara” is their first official release. With a sound that combines the haunting emotion of Daughter, the dazzling synth-pop of CHVRCHES, and ethereal enchantment of M83, FRAUDS could be the breakout electronic group of 2016.
