Sometimes a song seems perfect for a particular day or occasion, and that’s true of Robb Murphy’s “To Be A Fool“, which provides the perfect soundtrack for April Fool’s Day.
Originally released on Robb’s 2015 album “Sleep Tonight“, “To Be a Fool” isn’t a comedy song or a prank. Press “play” and absolutely nothing scary, shocking or smelly will happen. You’ll just be treated to a melodic and thoughtful song with a blend of inspiration “I hope you shine bright as a star…” and permission “I’m young and got the right to be a fool.” Accompanied by Robb’s trademark, laid-back folky vocals and accomplished musical arrangements, this time featuring the Ulster String Quartet, this is a classy offering.
But it is April Fool’s Day, so expect some fun too. Robb promised us a special video to accompany the song so expect something playful and – yes – a little bit foolish. Just scroll below to share the joy!
“To Be a Fool” isn’t the only track on Sleep Tonight that is worth a listen. It also includes a favourite of mine “Headstrong” which has a cheeky little rhythm that chuckles around the brain. “Headstrong” comes with its own, somewhat surreal video that features animals (not real ones, people dressed in onesie-style animal suits) escaping from a zoo. Weird or what?
The album also features “When Love is Tangled Between Friends” which Robb released as a single last Christmas. Although it isn’t a seasonal song, when accompanied by a video with a festive theme it told a story of lost love that is timeless but particularly poignant when others are glowy with romance.
Sleep Tonight isn’t all fluff and fun. Opening track “The Darker Side” sets a scene, “When the night falls in and the nightmares come…” and, with slightly spooky harmonies, may be one that Robb has in mind for Halloween?
Already receiving critical acclaim in his native Northern Ireland, Robb Murphy is a songwriter and musician whose career is poised to break out into the wider world. And that’s no joke!
Alongside the Ulster String Quartet, Robb Murphy is also accompanied by:
Kevin Carlisle – drum and percussion
David Bennington – bass, trumpet, electric guitar
Alan Ladd – piano
Nick Topping – bass guitar
Louise Ladd and Lottie Field – vocals
