The Spring Fling Rock AF tour is concluding today, however during its final week it made a stop at the Main Street Armory in Rochester, NY. This synergistic lineup featured four fabulous bands: Bear Hands, Foals, Silversun Pickups and Cage The Elephant. The first two acts to take the stage were Bear Hands and Foals, who were featured in yesterday’s photo essay.
Next up were Silversun Pickups of Los Angeles, who engulfed their fans in a flood of songs from their quartet of albums, including their 2015 release Better Nature. The crowd was abidingly captivated from the beginning to end of their set, rounded out by favourites like “Panic Switch” and “Lazy Eye“.
The evening was headlined by Kentucky-hailing Cage The Elephant. From their first song “Cry Baby“, Matt Shultz’s energy overflowed from that stage and inundated the arena. The floor became alive with outstretched arms, cheers and more crowd surfers than I’ve ever seen at an indoor venue. A few fans became boldly adventurous, climbing onto the stage and had the thrill of dancing alongside the band. Their encore let the crowd catching their breath by starting with “Cigarette Daydreams“, but ended in a craze during “Teeth” when Shultz dove with abandon among those in attendance. After returning to the stage, the band gathered the set lists and tossed them towards the mingling of hands vying to take home not just memories but a coveted memento from the evening.
With about 4 hours of great music, you could only come away satiated and exhausted.
The tour was only 15 stops, so if you weren’t fortunate enough to attend, or even if you did and want to enjoy it again, do yourself a favour and make a Spring Fling 2016 playlist.
Pictures from both bands’ performances are below.
Cage The Elephant is comprised of Matthew Shultz (vocals), Brad Shultz (guitar), Jared Champion (drums) and Daniel Tichenor (bassist).
Silversun Pickups is comprised of Brian Aubert (guitar/lead vocals), Christopher Guanlao (drums), Joe Lester (keyboard) and the stylishly-dressed Nikki Monninger (bass/vocals).
