Today we have six new tracks for your mid-week listening pleasure which include a mix of R&B inspired synth pop, 80s inspired pop, cinematic alt folk rock, indie rock and a little more synth pop. We hope you find your new favorite band or artist today.
Evy and the Gaffer – “Upside Down” (Boulder, CO, USA)
RIYL: If Erykah Badu did an electronic album
Evy and the Gaffer are an R&B inspired synth pop duo creating an awesome mix of soulful vocals set against unique breaks, beats and samples.
We don’t know a whole lot about Evy and the Gaffer except they are currently located in Boulder, CO and they have been creating music for about 4 years, and finally started to release it.
We are definitely all ears with the few tracks they have released on soundcloud including “Bad Dream” and “Butterfly”.
Fieu – “Impossible” (Brisbane, Australia)
RIYL: A modernized Tiffany
We last shared “Running” from Fieu last fall and we are happy to share her newest release, “Impossible”.
While “Running” was a little more heavy on synth, we hear a more traditional pop sound that reminds us of an early 80s vibe. The chorus is addicting and the track holds your attention throughout. Fieu is Emily Brewis and we become immediately taken in by her smooth yet strong vocals and authentic songwriting.
With recent showings from Fieu proving her talent in the pop/synthpop arena, she has all the elements needed to break out internationally.
Lake Jons – “In Time” (Helsinki, Finland)
RIYL: Local Natives, Midlake, Bon Iver
Lake Jons have just released their newest track, “In Time” and it’s an amazing folk inspired alternative rock track. With soaring harmonies and beautiful vocals that keep you mesmerized throughout, we look forward to their upcoming EP, Explode which is a follow up to their most recently released EP, Explore.
Singer Jooel Jons shares that “In Time” is about the importance of taking risks.
This summer the band is taking to the studio to record their upcoming debut album which should be out sometime in 2017. Lake Jons is comprised of Jooel Jons, Mikko Pennanen and Jaska Stenroth.
The Lightning Year – “Endless Memory” (London, England)
RIYL: Two Door Cinema Club, Girl Friend, Passion Pit
Discovering new music is so much fun. Many times we get e-mails or find bands on twitter, and sometimes you just happen upon a great song by accident. “Endless Memory” was discovered just that way. We don’t know much about the The Lightning Year except that it’s the project of Matt Bishop.
“Endless Memory” is a great track with an addicting chorus, fast paced and really cool lyrics about important relationships and also the importance of music and how it fits into the fabric of our lives.
New York Movie – “Firecracker” (Austin, USA)
RIYL: a poppy version of The War on Drugs, KAPTAN
New York Movie is back and they never cease to amaze in the production of upbeat and catchy tunes yet set against lyrics with substance. “Firecracker” on the surface is indie synth-pop goodness with an 80s vibe.
They always find a way to throw in deep lyrics and then you realize they are more than just your average pop outfit. In “Firecracker” you hear “When you suffer through summer, living under a curse, you think it’s easier to run than to find a cure.” and you know these guys have the right production and songwriting to go far.
New York Movie is the project of Austin Jones and Philip Anderson Edsel and we should be hearing a lot more from these two in 2016.
Paul Mayson – “Miles Away” (Netherlands)
Paul Mayson has rapidly become one of the Netherlands’ highly featured upcoming electronic artists. Paul has been spreading his unique signature sound doing big shows and tours around Europe and Asia.
“Miles Away” is his newest release which includes awesome production and beats that make you want to move along with the unique vocals of guest singer Ashley Hicklin.
“Miles Away” is the producer’s follow-up to his last successful single “Want Me” and his collaboration with Far East Movement titled ”Pray”. “Miles Away” is a combination of Paul‘s trademark production and Ashley’s syrupy vocal melodies. We will be hearing more from Mr. Mayson in 2016.
