Ottawa got a taste of DZ Deathrays this summer at RBC Bluesfest Ottawa, and this viewer was especially impressed with their performance. So when I heard they were returning to town to play House of Targ, I was very intrigued. This time, they were performing with Dine Alone Records label-mates Dune Rats in what has been dubbed the International Disaster Tour.

For the Ottawa show, Dune Rats were given the task of closing in honour of the release of their new single, “Scott Green”, which meant DZ Deathrays took the stage first. They wasted no time in grabbing the audience by the ears and getting their bodies moving. With each song played, the exuberance of the fans grew until hitting a crescendo about halfway through the set. At this moment, House of Targ was a mass of dancing bodies bouncing off each other (and nearby objects) all to the beat of the music.

When Dune Rats took the stage, the audience was still buzzing from DZ Deathrays’ performance and wasted no time immersing themselves into the new musical offering right from the start. The energy that both these bands extracted from the crowd was something rarely observed in Ottawa, a town often accused of being too conservative or boring. Clearly, this audience did not get or believe that message!

Local band Coveter got things started before the two headline acts took the stage.
