ALYESKA – “Tilt-A-Whirl” (Los Angeles, USA)
RIYL: Laura Marling, Dinosaur Jr, Kurt Vile
ALEYSKA just released “Tilt-A-Whirl” and it’s a youth filled track that takes us back to those county fair days. The vocals of Ms. Alaska Reid completely mesmerize us with her breathy tone and whimsical lyrics. The mix of 90s and a 60s surf vibe has us hooked.
Ms. Reid shares a bit about the track: “Tilt-A-Whirl’ is an ode to the small county fair in my town. My friends and I would look forward to going every year, we’d see boys we had crushes on, and scream about the creepy carnies or the way your feet turned black with dirt in your yellow flip flops.”
We are completely digging ALEYSKA. Their debut EP, Crush, will be released independently on March 3.

The Bright Young Things – “Bombs & Bridges” (Los Angeles, USA)
RIYL: Bleached, Tacocat, The Regrettes
We don’t know much about The Bright Young Things, heck we can only find them on Soundcloud currently and the only description listed with the track is “Surf wave with killer vocals”. That is a pretty good description.
We do know that “Bombs & Bridges” is an awesome track. It’s surfy-60s inspired rock with killer female vocals that chronicles a dysfunctional relationship. We have lyrics that include “Show me how to start a fire, you tell me how to build a bridge, but then you build a bomb on it. Show me how you’re gonna lie cuz you do it all the time.”
We hope by the next track that is released we have a bit more info about The Bright Young Things that we can share with you.
Day Wave – “Something Here” (Oakland, USA)
RIYL: Surf Rock Is Dead, Sundara Karma, Trails and Ways
Day Wave is Jackson Phillips (1/2 of Carousel) and he just keeps making awesome atmospheric tracks with a perfect mix of synth and guitar pop.
“Something Here” is feel good and a perfect track to get us primed up for warmer weather. Texas broke warm weather records last weekend so we are already longing for summer here in Austin.
Mr. Phillips never disappoints with each new track release. We are patiently awaiting his upcoming debut album, The Days We Had, which will be released May 5th via I OH YOU and Liberator Music. You can pre-order the album here.

New Portals – “Stereo” (Belfast, Ireland)
RIYL: IDER, Myzica, The Jepettos
New Portals have been on a lot of people’s radar since they released their track “Stay Here Tonight” last year. The electronic duo are making waves with their upbeat and dance-able electro pop.
“Stereo” is another release that totally gets you moving. The track keeps reminding us about needing sunlight so this is another one we can add to our warmer weather playlists. It also has a youthful tone that reminds of high school relationships where you just couldn’t wait to spend time with your current flame.
New Portals will also be playing at SXSW this year, so they are on our list to check out their live set.

Sigrid – “Don’t Kill My Vibe” (Ålesund/Bergen, Norway)
RIYL: DAYA, Kiiara, Sofi Tukker
Sigrid is 20 years old from Norway, and she recently dropped her debut single with “Don’t Kill My Vibe”. She has been songwriting since she has been a teenager and the Ålesund native moved to Bergen at 18 and was catapulted into the music scene. Now signed to Island Records, we could have a rising pop star on our hands.
Sigrid’s vocals are captivating and she sings with confidence and conviction on her debut single. She is letting everyone know that she won’t allow others to affect her forward movement in life.
Sigrid shares a bit about the track: “it may be a message to your cat, telling her that she’s not the master of the universe. Or maybe it’s just a really long DM saying you’re SO done with someone”
“Don’t Kill My Vibe” is released via Island Records.
