Since 2015, we have asked independent artists to share their favorite memories from their time at SXSW. In just a couple of years, this project has become one of our most popular features thanks to the growing interests of bands and singers from around the world. Forty-five artists participated in this year’s edition, including Slow Dancer.
Based in Melbourne, Australia, Simon Okely has one of the most sensational voices on the planet, akin to the angelic quality of Jim James. And like the My Morning Jacket frontman’s solo career, Okely creates songs that are clever and thoughtful and music that combines soul, pop, funk, and folk. His career is just picking up steam, and when his new album, In A Mood, arrives June 9th (via Pieater (AUS) and ATO Records (US)), we might witness this future star’s explosion.
Despite his incredible voice, he’s man of few words, but he sure likes to get his picture taken – or so it seems from his SXSW experience.
