Since 2015, we have asked independent artists to share their favorite memories from their time at SXSW. In just a couple of years, this project has become one of our most popular features thanks to the growing interests of bands and singers from around the world. Forty-five artists participated in this year’s edition, including Annabel Allum.

Allum is one of England’s rising artists. Her honest and poignant songwriting and her fierce style are akin to a young P.J. Harvey and Nick Cave. Her intensity can be felt in everything she does, but she also can find humor in life’s hiccups. She shares one such moment in her SXSW memory.

After 2 back to back shows in a day, heading to Willie Nelson’s house for his private festival, and drinking my first “moonshine”, we head back to central Austin to party the night away on the 6th. We had seen enough cowboys and heard enough “yeehaws” for one evening –  but that didn’t stop us playing some wild country music on the drive back!

It was all highs until the car broke down, and we got stuck on the side of the highway! The night grew darker and after multiple calls to various pick up truck companies, we got the car back to the house I was staying in with my team. It must have been close to 5am by this point, and realising I didn’t have a key we slept in the car! That was my craziest day. Worth it to see Willie!
