Since 2015, we have asked independent artists to share their favorite memories from their time at SXSW. In just three years, this project has become one of our most popular features thanks to the growing interests of bands and singers from around the world. These memories are from Thandi Phoenix.
While many young electro-pop, future soul, and R&B singers attempt to emulate what they hear on the radio or in the clubs, the young Sydney-based artist is taking her art even further. She’s not only using her music to entertain but to share empowering messages. In addition, with her smokey voice, she’s not a one-trick pony. On the contrary, she can easily provide vocals on a raging electronic number and a sultry, classic R&B tune. No wonder fans in Australia and those at Triple J have hopped on to the 25-year old’s bandwagon. While her music may show a serious side, she fully enjoyed herself in Austin, meeting up with old friends and trying to recruit those from the First Order.
Austin! Me and my team made ittttt!!! No one lost anything…. well almost! But we’re checked into our AirBnB and ready for the madness to begin.
No one was ready for the pic but always ready for the crab.
I’ve never had an issue with claustrophobia, but I felt it coming on. Dam Austin! Bodies on bodies!
Aussies in Austin. Bumped into David from Gang of Youths. We’re both playing at Aussie BBQ. Bring on the sausage sizzle + onions + extra sauce!
You’re looking at the newest recruits to my security team. They don’t play.
The boys from Lime Cordiale were down some players, so my drummer Yanya stepped in. Caring is sharing goiysss.
Just a regular day, being a throne for a queen – Elsz.
Look I’m a gal on the go. Phone charging. Check. Sustenance. Check. Multi-tasking. Check. And yes I ate all three slices.
Do you ever look back at videos you’ve taken and think who and what was I recording, is this suppose to be artistic? Side to side. Zoom in zoom out. Hahaha forgive me. Here’s a screenshot of that shaky vid I took of Khalid. Clearly, I was feeling it. The jacket, the faux cloud installation, or maybe it was all the beers….. Yes, yes, & yes.
When in Texas, right? Mmmmmm, I’m salivating just thinking about this meal.
