Since 2015, we have asked independent artists to share their favorite memories from their time at SXSW. In just three years, this project has become one of our most popular features thanks to the growing interests of bands and singers from around the world. These memories are from mallrat.
The project of Grace Shaw and the self-proclaimed “Hannah Montana of the rap game”, the young Brisbane native is more like Charli XCX and Alessia Cara rolled into one talented individual. Besides the infectious, dance-inducing beats, she has a sharp, biting tongue that if you aren’t careful you could be the subject of her next song. Fortunately for those in Austin, she had a blast.
This was the first thing that caught my eye when we landed in Texas.
This is me peaking through the window on the second level of our accommodation.
This is Denim (my DJ/ best friend) and me before our first SXSW showcase – a.k.a. first show outside of Australia! Looking very spritely.
We were talking to Stacy, our American tour manager, about different foods that you can only find in Australia or America. We told her about something called “fairy bread”. It’s a really special treat that parents usually make for their kids’ birthday parties, and it’s just rainbow sprinkles and butter on white bread. On a super busy day in the middle of SXSW, Stacy surprised us with vegan fairy bread that she had made specially for us! I thought that was so sweet of her. It was delicious 💕
This is Denim, our friend Annika (Alice Ivy), and me on our last day at SXSW! Annika is our good mate from Australia. She makes really cool, sample-based electronic music.
This is us three again getting vegan doughnuts in a pedi cab! Our cyclist (with the pink hair) was such a nice lady that we bought her a doughnut, too. This pic was taken by our new friend Jeremy! He interviewed us at SXSW and was such a legend.
