The Matinee ’18 May 21st includes an eclectic mix today to begin your week. We have hazy dream pop, pop punk, singer-songwriter fare as well as great indie rock. Artists are representing Germany, The US, The UK today. We hope you find your new favorite artist, band or song today.
bdrmm – “the way i want” (Hull, England)
RIYL: Beach House, DIIV, Yuck
“the way i want” is the newest single from bdrmm. The song is a laid back and breezy track inspired by unwanted communication and normal every day routine. The band recently released their debut track “Kare” and so far they are mastering the art of dream pop. “the way i want” is filled with sun soaked synth, hazy vocals and jangly guitar.
Ryan Smith shares about the track: “I was woken up by a phone call from someone I didn’t want to speak to, so I put Pavement on and made some scrambled eggs. I had a day off work and wanted to write something new but had no inspiration so just used my morning as the influence.”
bdrmm have enlisted the help of producer, and Forever Cult bassist, Alex Greaves (Trash, PLAZA, Seeing Hands) to bring their self-styled ‘gross dreamy noise’ to life on their opening official releases.
bdrmm are Ryan Smith (vocals/guitar), Jordan Smith (bass), Joe Vickers (guitar), Daniel Hull (synth/backing vocals), and Aaron Moreton (drums).
Gurr – “Hot Summer” (Berlin, Germany)
RIYL: The Bangles, The Go-Gos, Nelson Can
Gurr has a new track titled “Hot Summer”. It’s a killer pop rock gem that is actually a bit an anti-summer tune yet it still totally rocks. The track is definitely one that forces you to move and has you hitting repeat. We hear that awesome 80s underlying rock (Like The Go-Gos “We Got The Beat”). Even though it’s an anti-summer theme, it will still be jammed on a warm weather weekend playlist.
The duo share a bit about the track: “We wanted to write a song that sounds like you want to get fucking crazy to it but also shout: Shit, maybe the condom did break, or shit, did I forget to take the pill, or shit, why is everyone around me doing ok and I feel like I need therapy. It’s a celebration of the imperfect summer, and everyday neurosis.”
Gurr are Andreya Casablanca and Laura Lee Jenkins. The duo will be touring to support the new single as well as performances at Rock Am Ring, Melt and Lollapalooza Berlin.
MAWD – “Dark Room” (Los Angeles, USA)
RIYL: Alabama Shakes, Elle King, Janis Joplin
MAWD is the project of Madeleine Mathews. “Dark Room” is her latest single release. Her vocals are full of soulful attitude and immediately draw you in once the first lyric is sung. Ms. Mathews has similarities to Elle King and even Janis Joplin yet she is demonstrating her own sound which falls between sultry blues, folk/blues and of course rock. MAWD is also a talented musician playing the piano, guitar, ukelele, bass, accordian and even the banjo.
The lyrics on “Dark Room” speak to the theme of isolation and how it can be dangerious. MAWD shares about the meaning behind the track: “I felt like I was going crazy, sitting in my dark dingy dorm room, struggling with the longing for a comforting feeling, trying to fit in, feeling like a stranger in my skin, and discovering a new dark part of my mind”.
“Dark Room” is from Mathews’ debut self-titled EP, which is out this Friday, May 25th via Sound x3 Music.
Michael Malarkey – “Captain Solitaire” (Londong, England via Beirut, Lebanon)
RIYL: Lincoln Durham, Nick Cave, Tom Waits
“Captain Solitaire” is the newest released from actor turned singer-songwriter Michael Malarkey. The track has a sweeping folk feel and the dual vocals on the chorus are a nice touch. “Captain Solitaire” is the most recent follow up from last year’s Mongrels. On his newest track, Mr. Malarkey tackles the theme of isolation with the lyrics describing how going inward can be harmful:
Hang in there, blood keeps rushing to your head, and your eyes are kaleidoscopes / You watch it all with sunset eyes / But you’re getting delirious, captain Solitaire / Because you’re the dealer dealing aces to yourself /
Because you’re the dealer dealing aces to yourself.
The combination of Michael Malarkey’s commanding baritone vocals and transparent yet relatable lyrics perfectly position him to make waves in the singer-songwriter genre.
Puppet Rebellion – “Cupboards Painted Red” (Manchester, England)
RIYL: No Hot Ashes, Jimmy Eat World, Mellor
“Cupboards Painted Red” is from Manchester quintet Puppet Rebellion. The track is from the band’s debut album titled Chemical Friends. The song conveys memorable harmonies with solid percussion, strong riffs as well as fluid vocals from Oliver Davies.
The lyrics however paint a different story as the song details a dark narrative of the experiences of witnessing domestic abuse through the eyes of a child.
The band have recently released a video for the single as well. You can watch it here.
Puppet Rebellion are Oliver Davies, Henry Rogers, Paul Trochowski, James Halliwell, and Craig Gibson.
RIYL: Daley, Gallant, The Weeknd
“Emotion” is the latest collaboration between DJ duo Vindata (Branden Ratcliff and Jared Poythress) and the talented R&B singer R.LUM.R.
The collaboration brings together Vindata’s slick production skills which include hypnotic synth and killer beats along with R.LUM.R’s honey dipped vocals. It’s the perfect track to add to your R&B inspired playlist or any weekend where it’s time to get ready to go out on the town.
“Emotion” is the first track released after R.LUM.R’s EP, ALTERIMAGE which were all renditions from his acclaimed 2017 EP titled AFTERIMAGE. R.LUM.R just finished up the Hangout Festival this past weekend and will be also playing Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza.
