Since their arrival in 2014 from Christchurch, New Zealand and through three EPs and two full-length albums, Yumi Zouma have overwhelmed listeners across the globe with their blissful dream-pop. They are undeniably one of Aotearoa’s most accomplished musical exports, as they release songs that are memorably breathtaking and uplifting. The now transcontinental band continue their winning streak with another sublime number in “Cool For a Second”.
The single is made for quiet, introspective times, such as the ones currently before us. Through the lingering plucks of the chiming guitar, the gentle rhythms, and the calmness of the keys, the music envelopes the listener and provides a bit of relief. The blissful melody is like a cool breeze on a hot, sweltering day – or for those enduring winter’s mid-January wrath, a warm blanket on a bitterly cold night. Christie Simpson’s saccharrine voice adds to the pleasant utopia, as she lushfully sings about second chances and new opportunities. As she wisely sings:
“It’s not a dark situation / I’d rather tumble than to be taking it slow.”
The entire song is filled with motivational quotes, which is refreshing in this day and age where repetition fills radiowaves. Great songwriting matched with stirring sounds, however, will always reign in the hearts of music fans.
Yumi Zouma are Christie Simpson (vocals, keyboards), Josh Burgess (guitar, bass guitar, vocals, keyboards), Charlie Ryder (guitar, bass guitar, keyboards), and Olivia Campion (drums).
“Cool For A Second” is the lead single from the quartet’s forthcoming, third full-length record, Truth or Consequences, which will be released March 13th. Polyvinyl Records, Inertia Music, and Rallye Label / Rallye Co., Ltd. will distribute it. Pre-orders available here.
