Screaming Females have been one of our favorite bands to cover on The Revue, and we were stoked to be invited to their Rose Mountain record release show in Brooklyn this past weekend. It was the first of two sold-out shows at The Knitting Factory. Both had a fantastic Don Giovanni Records Showcase lineup of Vacation, Tenement, Priests, and Screaming Females. All three openers were great, Vacation brought their awesome, fast-paced psych-rock sound to the stage; Tenement continued the frenetic pace; and Priests (whom we’ve covered before) proved why they’re a can’t-miss live band.
Screaming Females’ brand of punk rock truly offers something unique, especially in the live environment. Marissa Paternoster is one of the best guitarists in the world, and live you can see exactly why we keep making that claim. Her solos are played with incredible ferocity, sometimes from within the crowd or from the floor of the stage. She’s unpredictable and that’s what makes a Screaming Females show so awesome. Her voice is also something to behold live, powerful, and unique, and the origin of the name “Screaming Females” will be made quite clear.
Bassist King Mike and drummer Jarrett Dougherty make up one of the tightest rhythm sections in rock and roll right now. Mike’s bass lines lay the groundwork and allow Paternoster to freely do as she pleases with her guitar. Dougherty’s drumming is of frenetic precision, full of energy and impact, but dynamic and stable. Seeing them do their thing live is always impressive.
The set was a mix of new and old, playing tracks like “Ripe” from Rose Mountain, which totally rips live, as well as some old favorites like “Lights Out” and “Baby Jesus”. It’ must be tough to figure out where new songs fit in with a live show that’s already pretty much perfect, but the new tracks fit in seamlessly. It was a great show that felt a little too short, but with two shows in one night, it was expected. They always put on a great show and always leave you wanting just a little more than they gave you, but that’s a good thing. These shows are so much fun, they fly by.
Go see Screaming Females! They’re going on an extensive tour over the next few months, and you can not miss them!
