Hovering under the radar for the last couple of years, Briana Marela is about to emerge as a large blip on the music scene. With her delicate, shimmering voice, she caught the attention of production duo ODESZA, with whom she collaborated on “For Us” (which is below) last fall.

Now, the Seattle, Washington native is about to release her second album, All Around Us, which will be released by indie label giant Jagjaguwar on August 21st (pre-order here). The first single from the album is the startling, ethereal, experimental dream-pop “Surrender”. It starts off innocently enough, but by the end of the song Marela has completely captivated and enthralled with her gentle voice and playful melodies that are complemented by flashes of blips and beats. You wouldn’t be mistaken in thinking her approach is something out of Iceland or Norway, as the album was recorded by Sigur Ros producer Alex Somers in Reykjavik, Iceland.

And despite the big names supporting her, Marela started from humble beginnings and launched a Kickstarter campaign back in 2013 in order to raise funds for her to record the album. Discover this emerging artist, whose talent recalls a young Bjork and Jenny Hval, with whom she just so happens to be going on tour. Dates are below.

“Surrender” is also part of the May 22nd Edition of the Weekend Showcase, which stars 19 other indie artists and bands you ought to know.
