Today’s CoverBack Thursday is a successful Canadian rock band Arkells covering an emerging Canadian singer-songwriter Tobias Jesso Jr. Today we will share the cover plus the original in case you are not familiar with Tobias Jesso Jr. Jesso’s original version is tracked behind piano and Arkells offer a nice acoustic guitar and piano laden version of “Can’t Stop Thinking About You” which is off Jesso’s album released in March titled Goon.
Arkells is comprised of Anthony Carone, Mike DeAngelis, Nick Dika, Max Kerman, and Tim Oxford. They utilize piano/keys pretty well in their own songs but with a much more rockin’ sound. It was nice to hear a stripped back acoustic track from the band with this cover.
If you are not familiar with Arkells, last year’s album release of High Noon is definitely worth checking out. Here is what lead singer Max Kerman said about the cover: “When I heard the Tobias record, I immediately got jealous. The chord-melodies and string arrangement are right up my alley. He’s channelling all the 70’s piano-balladeers that I love so much. I think there is a real kinship in our songwriting, and dude’s got nicer curls than me too. Might be a long lost cousin.”
If you are heading to any summer Canadian festivals, you can catch Arkells at Ottawa Bluesfest on July 12, Rock The Park on July 18, Osheaga Festival on August 1 and Squamish Festival August 7.
Here is the cover by Arkells, and also the original version by the talented Tobias Jesso Jr.
