Every two years, one of the best arts and music festival in New Zealand takes place. Aptly called New Zealand Festival, the three-week extravaganza features the best international and national talent in theatre, film, and music, and the 2018 programs is the Festival’s most ambitious. On Saturday night, Kiwi singer-songwriter Ria Hall put on a magnificent performance at the pop-up venue on Wellington’s waterfront. Following the spectacular opening ceremony of the New Zealand festival, which commemorated the arrival of Kupe and his wife to the shores of Aotearoa (New Zealand), Ria and her band The Nudge brought the kaupapa of the album Rules of Engagement to life with special guest Mara TK.
For those unfamiliar with Hall, she’s one of the country’s great artists and has one of the most powerful voices you’ll hear. When she stands on stage, she commands your attention. Her artistry, meanwhile, ranges from reggae, soul, R&B, and even a little bit of pop. She writes, however, like a poet, using vivid imagery to take us deep into her stories, messages, and experiences. She’s one of New Zealand’s great treasures, who is still waiting to be discovered.
Rules of Engagement is out now via Loop Recordings, and it is available on Bandcamp. A few photos of her performance at NZ Festival are below.
