LOST SOUL: THE DOOMED JOURNEY OF RICHARD STANLEY’S ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU
directed by David Gregory
The Mayfair Theatre
1074 Bank Street
If seeing Marlon Brando in heavy pancake makeup and wrapped in cheesecloth is something you missed when The Island of Dr. Moreau first ran (and quickly hid) back in 1996, then here’s a chance to right that wrong. That horrible, horrible, wrong. A strong contender for the worst movie ever made, the making of this unbelievable mess is even more fantastic. Told mainly from original director Richard Stanley’s point of view, this delicious doc piles on outrageous story after outrageous story. Of course we are dealing with two of Hollywood’s primo crazies in their wacky prime: Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer, going head to head in H. G. Well’s man-beast vivisection tome, but they are just pieces of a very large and convoluted mess that features a leading lady who attempts to escape the set (by driving across Australia), a fired director who sneaks back on set in a doggie mask, and the true origin of Mini Me. A must see.
