School is out, and people are getting ready to set off on their summer holidays, whether visiting a new destination or heading to the cottage. But in our opinion, the best trip is the extended road trip, whether travelling across your home country or flying to a new one and hiring a vehicle and just driving. There’s nothing like a road trip with friends and family, seeing things you couldn’t from any other vantage point, meeting the interesting characters on the way, discovering a hole-in-the-wall that serves awesome food, littering the car floor with wrappers and napkins, and, of course, having to use those not-so-inviting washrooms.
The other thing that every road trip must have is music. At one point or another, we have created a playlist or soundtrack for the long journey. They’re often filled with some good favorites and some cool, new gems. As you prepare for your road trip this summer, we’ve offered our own ideas on what could be on the playlist. There are some classics and new songs. We’ve also combined them all into a single playlist at the very end for those with Spotify. We hope you enjoy it and have a safe and fantastic summer. May your travels have at least one trip!
Blur, “Song 2”
The perfect start to a road trip playlist. If you have a convertible, even better for everyone to hear you yell, “Woohoo!”
Bon Jovi, “Living on a Prayer”
Every road trip needs a song that makes you scream at the top of your lungs, and Bon Jovi’s “Living on a Prayer” does just that.
Cake, “The Distance”
The perfect song to keep you going on your road trip, just try not to speed too much and end up with a ticket.
Doug Keith, “I Will Burn For You”
Doug Keith’s Pony is a great road trip album. Not only is it perfect for the vast expanses of open road, it also features some really awesome musicians including members of Dinosaur Jr, The War On Drugs, and Megafaun. “I Will Burn For You” is a great track, but you can’t go wrong with anything off of Pony.
Drive-By Truckers, “Never Gonna Change”
Just a bad-ass southern rock track from one of the best bands of the last 15 years.
Joe Ely, “The Road Goes On Forever”
You can’t help but sing along to this one, even though it’s a Robert Earl Keen original, the Texas born Americana legend Joe Ely provides a rockier version to this red dirt original. The road goes on forever and the party never ends……

My Morning Jacket, “One Big Holiday”
We are going on a holiday aren’t we?
Pink Floyd, “Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI-IX)”
Eventually a hot summer day will become a clear summer night, and perhaps there is no better track to drive past a glowing city skyline than Pink Floyd’s epic “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”, especially part VIII.
Real Estate, “Green Aisles”
A perfect laid back summer track, ideal for a long stretch of road.
Sheryl Crow, “Everyday is a Winding Road”
The perfect song for all the winding roads on your upcoming road trip.
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, “Runnin’ Down A Dream”
Crank this song all the way up, open the windows, and hit the road. It’s almost like this song was written specifically for a great road trip.
The Who, “Going Mobile”
This just makes me want to jump in an RV, hit the road and never come back!
