There are so many great acts at a festival like Ottawa Bluesfest that it is inevitable that you will miss some good ones. Last year, one of those acts for me was Pokey LaFarge. There was a buzz amongst the Bluesfest faithful about this man after his show, but it was too late for me.

The project of Andrew Heissler and joined by Joey Glynn (bass), Adam Hoskins (guitar), Ryan Koenig (harmonica, washboard, and snare drum), TJ Muller (cornet, trombone) and Chloe Feoranzo (clarinet, saxophone), Pokey LaFarge returned to Ottawa on July 3rd and I made it down to Ritual to catch his show. What was apparent very quickly was that the vast majority of those in attendance were already fans and were very familiar with his music and his act. They were eager to join Pokey in singing when appropriate and dancing any other time.

What also struck me was the demographics of the crowd. Pokey LaFarge drew a crowd from all age groups much like Bluesfest itself. The band sounded great right from the beginning, and although it took me a few songs to be completely won over I eventually was. Their live show is simply fantastic. When you get another chance to catch Pokey LaFarge, do not miss him!
