Montreal’s 3-day music and visual arts festival, Osheaga, was held July 29th through 31st. With this year’s sold-out event showcasing over 100 international acts, there was ample opportunity to take in a favourite band or discover someone new. The festival showcased numerous musical genres including up-and-comers, of-the-moment musicians, and sought-after, top-tier talent, which included headliners Radiohead, Lana Del Rey, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Housed in Parc Jean-Drapeau on Ile Ste-Hélène, the diversity of the environment allowed for a variation in the festival’s vibe while exploring the grounds. You could stay put at the larger River and Mountain stages to observe the artists from afar or join the frenzy of the thousands who packed close to the stages. One could venture to the Zone Picnik Electronik to dance from afternoon to night or choose the cooling shade at the cusp of the forest to take in the talent on the Valley stage. The ampitheatre of the Green stage showcased musicians in a playful setting, situated adjacent to multi-colored water fountains and carnival rides. Alternatively, nestled under a canopy of green, the Tree stage allowed for an intimate area to enjoy the artists.
To add to the experience, one would find interactive art to enjoy, skateboarding demos to entertain, and chill-out areas just to recharge one’s batteries before exploring the event anew. For myself, it is the synergism of the thoughtfully planned outdoor space, the caliber of musicians, and the infusion of art that make Osheaga an annual pilgrimmage.
The images of the pictorial oscillate purposefully from artist to environment. They are taken while standing in the crowd with the intent to immerse you, as I was, in the intoxicating festivities that form Osheaga. The photo essay includes shots of Allie X, Aurora, BØRNS, Busty and the Bass, Charlotte Cardin, Cloves, Dilly Dally, Elle King, Flume, Haelos, July Talk, Låpsley, Melanie Martinez, MisterWives, MØ, Night Riots, Nothing But Thieves, Oh Wonder, St. Lucia, The Last Shadow Puppets, The Struts, The Wombats, Vince Staples and Wolf Parade.
Next year’s event is slated for August 4th through 6th. Make the experience your own and mark the date!
