From disco to noir-pop to folk, Nicole Atkins’ music is consistently compelling no matter what she’s up to. From her disco dabble Slow Phaser to her most recent Goodnight Rhonda Lee, Atkins always leaves us guessing where she’ll go next. Yesterday, we got our answer with the stunning, southern-style throwback ballad, “Captain”.

“Captain” is gorgeous love song with a beautiful layer of pedal steel guitar, and Spoon’s Britt Daniel adds a delightful harmony throughout the track. While the track comes just in time for Valentine’s Day, it’s not the typical love tune, as Atkins paints a picture of two people lost at sea. This situation, though, presents opportunity. As Atkins sings, “I can be your captain for once / Let me be your captain for once / So come back to my arms.”

“Captain” was recorded at Muscle Shoals as was Italian Ice, which will be released April 17th on Single Lock Records. In addition to Daniel, The Avett Brothers, My Morning Jacket, and others make guest appearances. Pre-order or pre-save the album here.
