As I drove up to the Old Mill at Ashton just off Highway 7 southwest of Ottawa, I didn’t know what to expect. The building is reminiscent of England’s pubs with its black and white siding. The Ashton Pub, as it’s commonly known, is actually the first original English pub in the heart of the Ottawa Valley.

That afternoon, the room was packed. There was a special Veterans celebration, but I’m told it’s pretty much full every Sunday. The interior boasts a mixture of stone walls and wooden beams, the latter filled with coasters from close and far. At the bar is a selection of the local ABC beer brewed on site.

Kelly Sloan was getting ready to host the weekly open mic, adjusting her mic and tuning her guitar. It’s a regular gig she’s been doing for some time now, amid multiple tours out east and other local gigs. As she was about to start, I took a seat near the front, sat back and listened.
