Since the age of 14 when she signed with a major label, Alexa Melo has been writing and performing music with some of the industry’s top writing teams. However even at a young age, she didn’t want to be pigeonholed as a mainstream pop songstress. Instead, she wanted to play guitar-driven rock and pop-rock. Now at the age of 20, she’s broken away from the big label and started writing music she wants to hear and perform. “Bleach” is the result of her newfound independence, a downtempo, almost brooding rock track. It’s a cross between P.J. Harvey and Annie Lennox in terms of sound, although more sultry.

She hasn’t completed removed the pop influence from her sound. “Still Right Here” is a cinematic pop-rock track with attitude. It has the 80s vibe of Pat Benetar.

Melo is originally from Dartmouth, Massachusetts, but is now based in Los Angeles. She’s set to release her debut album June 2.

As you wait for Melo’s album, take a listen to the May 15th Edition of the Weekend Showcase, where you can find “Bleach” and 19 other great tracks.
