Maybe we should have saved this for our weekly CoverBack Thursday feature, but this one was too good to pass up.

Released last week, Belfast, Ireland singer-songwriter Lilla Vargen‘s cover of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Don’t Forget Me” is absolutely stunning. Applying a folk-pop approach, Vargen’s piano-based version feels more vulnerable and tender than the original. The smokiness in Vargen’s voice adds another texture to the song, which, no offence to Anthony Kiedis, the shirtless frontman couldn’t match.

Vulnerability and innocence are themes that seem to stand out in Vargen’s music. Her first single, “This Is Love”, which was released earlier this year, shares the same sentiments and minimalistic qualities as “Don’t Forget Me”. Just a stunning song from a mysterious artist who retains a low profile, although likely not for long.

Lilla Vargen’s “Don’t Forget Me” cover is featured on the June 12th edition of The Weekend Showcase, a weekly playlist featuring new music from around the world. Check. It. Out.
