After a three-year break since their sophomore album This Is An Adventure, The Lighthouse and The Whaler return with Mont Royal. Produced by Stars and Arcade Fire collaborator Marcus Paquin in the hip Montreal neighbourhood with which the album shares its name, the Cleveland-based quartet have in Mont Royal embraced the city’s mantra of living life to its fullest, celebrating every moment, and never settling for the ordinary. These themes resonate throughout the album, which reflects the band’s growth and maturation.

The album, however, isn’t just all rosy and optimistic, but it is also…

Breathtakingly cinematic, highlighted by the opener, “In Motion”, which is driven during the chorus by a whirlwind of percussion and the exclamation of “I’m o.k.!”; the slow-building but stunning “In The Open”; and the glacial brilliance of the closing track, “We Are Infinite, which has the synth-pop elegance of M83. …Expansive with its orchestral pop numbers, such as the euphoric “Glory” and “I Want To Feel Alive”, which resounds of the indie pop of Ra Ra Riot but performed with a string complement.

and Anthemic with its indie pop that resounds with the infectiousness of Bombay Bicycle Club and Gengahr, such as the synth-infused, ’80s-inspired tunes of “Senses” and “Closer” and the pulsating “Under”.

When you add all these elements up, The Lighthouse and The Whaler have created an album of glorious indie-pop and themes to match the sparkling sound. It’s an album that shines a light on the dreariest of days and one that will warm even the coldest times, making it perfect for one to say goodbye to summer while welcoming the bright colours of autumn.

The Lighthouse and The Whaler are Michael LoPresti, Matthew LoPresti, Mark Porostosky, and Ryan Walker. The band is heading out on tour in a couple of weeks. Dates are below. Join them for what surely will be an event.
