Alice Jemima – “Dodged a Bullet” (Devon, England)
RIYL: Shura, MIYNT, The xx
Alice Jemima is creating awesome, upbeat electronic based production that perfectly showcases her sultry and sweet vocals.
In June she released her debut EP, Liquorice and now she is currently working on a debut album. “Dodged a Bullet” is a bit of a paradox with the beat becoming totally danceable yet the lyrical content is about a lost relationship she is thankful ended.
The songwriting is also superb with the ‘dodged a bullet’ chorus that becomes completely addictive and stuck in your head. Towards the end she proclaims “There’s nothing left here to say, I dodged a bullet” and also “everything’s changed”. Most of us can relate to a past relationship we realized in hindsight should have ended a while ago.
We look forward to hearing more from Ms. Jemima. “Dodged a Bullet” is released by Sunday Best Recordings and will be available September 23rd.
Lowla – “Walls” (London, England)
RIYL: Daya, DNCE, Rozes
“Walls” is the brand new track from female duo LOWLA. We have completely 90s inspired POP glaring through with this newest track.
“Walls” flows with delicate harmonies, alongside gritty vocals, tribal beats and screeching riffs. Lyrically the track is inspiring speaking of revolution and social awareness. Lastly the entire song is massively dynamic and upbeat and you can’t help but want to dance. We also might want to go out and make a change in this world with the parting lyric stating “You are an institution, raise your voice and walk in union”.
Lo and Lara share a bit about the inspiration behind the track: “‘Walls is all about the here and the now and the world that we live in. It’s a very personal number for us. We truly believe in the power of people getting together and making a change.”
“Walls” is the title track from LOWLA’s upcoming EP Walls which will be released on September 30th via DIY.
Mayflower – “I’m Not There” (Manchester, England)
RIYL: Local Natives, Old Sea Brigade, VYNCE
Mayflower continues producing tracks that take you to a place that immediately makes you feel relaxed. They are usually warm, hazy and calming just like the perfect days right between summer and fall.
With “I’m Not There” we have the perfect hybrid of dream pop, shoegaze and indie rock that has huge crossover appeal. The reverb is just perfect, the light and airy guitar riffs intertwine with expansive percussion and top notch vocals. You can’t deny these talented four lads from Manchester. Their lyrics are to be noted as well, with a bit of melancholy throughout the subject matter of nostalgia and past relationships.
We look forward to hearing more from Mayflower. “I’m Not There” will be released September 2.
Swimsuit Addition – “I Need U” (Chicago, USA)
RIYL: Tacocat, Bleached, The Coathangers
Swimsuit Addition has been around a while, but they have just recently uploaded a track to soundcloud so we can share their music.
With “I Need U” we have an amazing mix of frenetic energy all wrapped up in a nice new wave + punk package. We can only imagine what a live show by Swimsuit Addition might be like. The vocals are angst filled and in your face, and we wouldn’t want it any other way.
Swimsuit Addition is Dot, Becca, Sam and Michael.
This song is from Swimsuit Addition’s forthcoming EP, Killin’ Time. It arrives August 17 on Tall Pat Records.
VACAY – “The Other Side” (Toronto, Canada)
RIYL: Ed Sheeran, James Bay, Sam Smith
VACAY is Levi Randall, a young man, with an old soul; a singer songwriter from Toronto with a passion for writing honest music. The project captures that classic feeling when times were simpler, life was easy, and the music oozed authenticity.
“The Other Side” is a lyrical gem speaking to those relationships where you are with someone, but you completely feel alone. Mr. Randall’s vocals are inviting and completely ethereal. With “The Other Side” being VACAY’s debut single, we realize Mr. Randall has everything present to truly breakout onto the singer-songwriter scene. His lyrics can reach many as we have all been in those relationships that lose passion.
“The Other Side” is off of Mr. Randall’s upcoming EP release titled Shaky Hands.
VOKES – “Wrong” (Los Angeles, USA)
RIYL: Chet Porter, Lostboycrow, RCKB
VOKES (Mike Harris) keeps churning out feel good and soul filled synth pop tracks. With “Wrong” he takes it down a notch and slows it down a bit.
Lyrically the track speaks to those relationship you just want to ‘do over’. The ones you want to forget about the past, admit the wrongs and start again. Mr. Harris’ vocals shine throughout “Wrong” and the track has just the right amount of subtle synth to keep you chill and ends with a really impressive guitar solo.
“Wrong” is from VOKES’ debut EP, Fractalism which came out earlier this month.
