Since 2015, we have asked independent artists to share their favorite memories from their time at SXSW. In just three years, this project has become one of our most popular features thanks to the growing interests of bands and singers from around the world. These memories are from Baywaves.
The Madrid-based quartet are Spain’s answer to Tame Impala and Beach Fossils. Their brand psychedelic-pop and beach-wave is infectious, groovy, and just downright awesome. Or as we have often said, their music is meant for dancing under the glimmer of numerous disco balls, where you can dance and trip up simultaneously. They have an EP coming out later this year via Art Is Hard, and it should be on everyone’s radar screen. Should you see these guys in concert – either in Europe or beyond – bring them a local delicacy to snack on. Trust us. They’ll appreciate it.
Hi! We are Baywaves from Madrid. First things first, we have to clarify that the thing we love the MOST when touring abroad (you know, apart from playing and getting to know people and dealing with ill-humored sound guys) is eating! Eating local, imported, cheap, expensive, or spicy. That explains a lot of the pictures chosen ❤️
That being said, this was our first time at SXSW. We’ve heard about it tons of times from friends that had already played there, but as a band it was our first ever American adventure. We stayed at the typical green-lawn entry-suburban house that sat across the street from a high school. Every morning we would see the huge Texan cars dropping kids at school in what could be the initial setting from a 2000s pop-punk video! LOL!
The house was just 5 minutes away from a huge supermarket. Every aisle was like a flower shop: full of flashy and colorful things, so we bought every cereal and chip and sauces that rang a bell.
We played 12 shows in 10 different venues, but the one we stayed at the most was Pearl St. Coop. It’s a student dorm like place with a pool, and we played with Girl Ray, Our Girl, and Hinds. The first night was proper CRAZY (tip: cheap Australian wine, not good) so we’ve picked the happiest and safest photo, with Ade, bassist of Hinds. 🙂
Then, there’s a picture in the parking lot of an In-N-Out Burger. Why? Well, we don’t have those in Spain and the burgers are OH MY GOD so good. And the shakes, damn. And so cheap. And also they were shooting a trap videoclip on the parking, so you may see us in the back of a hip-hop video soon. LOL!
The last picture is a photo of all the Madrid crew and friends: Joan, our manager; the girls from Hinds and their amazing tour manager Fiona; some of us; a guy I don’t know; the guys from FAVX, another amazing Madrid band (just released an EP with Burger Records, check them out); and Camila, our Colombian-Spanish guardian angel. That was the closing night: we ended all super dizzy, dancing cumbia on the stage of Hotel Vegas. A proper SXSW Latino ending! ❤️
