When Khruangbin and Leon Bridges announced they were collaborating on an album, we collectively celebrated. This was perfect harmony in our books – the sweeping, psychedelic swirls of Laura Lee (bass), Mark Speer (guitar), and Donald “DJ” Johnson (drums) combined with Bridges’ smooth, soulful delivery. What magic could these four concoct? They gave us a hint with the trippy, country-psychedelic vibes of “Texas Sun”. And if the first single is a trip through the deserts of southwest America, “C-Side” is an unexpected rendez-vous in a Chicago night club.

“C-Side” is smokey, funky, and sexy. Silky, smooth ’70s grooves radiate from Khruangbin’s deliver (Lee’s shallow bass line is intoxicating). Bridges, meanwhile, tells the tale of two people meeting for the first time and the instant chemistry that ignites between them. This song, in other words, is made for loving. It is made slow dancing with your long-time partner or as the background music to a chance encounter. As Bridges says, “Somebody is going to fall in love tonight.” Should this be your first listen of this great partnership, you, too, will fall in love with these outstanding artists.

Texas Sun appears on February 7th via Dead Oceans, and it can be pre-ordered online or just go to Bandcamp. It was included on our Most Anticipated Albums of 2020, and you can now understand why.
