Mundo Musique: Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange), “Chamakay”

by

There’s the old adage that behind every great woman/man there is a great person.  This often holds true for musicians and bands, where a producer can make a good album great and a songwriter can make the music uplifting and the lyrics mesmerizing.  Such is true with Devonté Hynes.  He’s collaborated with notable bands like The Chemical Brothers and written songs for Solange.  Florence + The Machine have long called on his support in terms of writing songs and performing on stage.  The multi-talented Hynes is a driving force in music.

In addition to his collaborative work, Hynes has also produced solo albums under the moniker Lightspeed Champion and recently as Blood Orange.  His 2011 album, Coastal Grooves, was one of my favourites of that year with its indie R&B, pop-rock sound that bids a nod to 80’s era Michael Jackson and Prince with a slice of electronica.  Hynes, under Blood Orange, is about to release a new album, Cupid Deluxe, some time this year.  It’s definitely one of my most anticipated albums of the year.

Last week, Hynes released the first single of his album, “Chamakay”, a slow groove song about dedication, love, and unity.  The video was shot in Georgetown, Guyana, his mother’s hometown.  Backup vocals are provided by Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek.  The video and song together are heartwarming.
