It’s the era of social media, no questions about it. Everyone uses it. President Barack Obama employed a massive social media campaign during his original run for the Oval Office in 2008, and that strategy helped him win the President election. For musicians, it’s a great way to not only promote themselves but a means to share their thoughts and connect with fans. For popular artists with huge management teams that try to control their every move, it’s the medium that they have free reign, which sometimes isn’t the best thing.
Anyway, here are 15 artists that we enjoy following on Twitter, Tumblr, or Instagram. We would have listed Facebook pages, but then again most artists are just re-posting their pics, thoughts, and messages on the three other sites on the original social media platform.
Aaron Dessner (Instagram)
Any Instagram feed that features Matt Berninger beeping and booping down a hallway with luggage pretending he’s C3PO and R2D2 is worth our time. While some of his posts are of his National Bandmates, Aaron Dessner’s Instagram feed gives us a look at his life while he’s not touring with The National.

Chuck D (Twitter)
Public Enemy’s Chuck D is an all-around cool guy. He’ll chat about almost anything on his Twitter, and he often educates people about current events. He’ll also retweet people’s messages to him, whether they’re about music or just general thoughts. But why we really dig him is that he’s not afraid to speak his mind, but he does it in a respectful and often humorous way. Some celebrities could learn a thing or two about connecting with ordinary people from the legendary artist.

Ezra Koenig (Twitter)
Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend is one incredibly quotable dude. He’s smart, funny, and isn’t afraid to get a little weird. Sounds a lot like his music.

There’s no denying that Grimes is a very creative artist. On her Tumblr, she posts some really interesting stuff, ranging from music to strange pictures. There’s some NSFW stuff on there, so be careful when clicking through.
Hayley Williams (Tumblr)
Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams seems to always pop up in “recommended” blogs on Tumblr and for good reason. She posts a lot of really cool stuff, from music to art to stuff she just finds cool. Williams is definitely a fun person to follow in Tumblr.
Jason Isbell (Twitter)
Jason Isbell’s music is among our favorite artists, not just musically but on social media. He might be the wittiest (and some would say cynical) artist penning this thoughts with 140 characters or less. The thing is, we often found ourselves agreeing with him.

Joe Fletcher (Instagram)
Joe Fletcher is one of the hardest working guys out there. He’s almost constantly on the road, as it seems like every day he posts an Instagram photo from another state. He always finds the coolest photo spot wherever he is.

The music of The Mountain Goats is quite witty, so it’s no surprise we enjoy following John Darnielle’s Twitter feed. However, his Tumblr is also great because he answers questions from fans and reblogs some really cool stuff. Rich digs his Tumblr because they follow the same wrestling blogs.
Lauren Mayberry (Twitter)
CHVRCHES’ singer Lauren Mayberry has gained a bit of a reputation for being outspoken on feminist issues recently. She’s told the people who leave some of the disgusting comments on her posts to “Bring it on”. While that’s pretty intense, she also shares a ton of cool stuff with and from CHVRCHES fans. We hope Ms. Mayberry continues to do her thing.
Leon Bridges (Instagram)
Leon Bridges’ music is a true throwback to the time of Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye. Perhaps it is no surprise then that Bridges’ Instagram feed is full of black-and-white photos that look like they’re from another time.

Ryan Adams (Twitter)
Ryan Adams likes cats. Ryan Adams also likes a lot of really awesome music. Ryan Adams also is one of the best songwriters of the last 20 years. We like following Ryan on Twitter (and we like cats!).
Sufjan Stevens (Tumblr)
Sufjan posts some really awesome stuff on his Tumblr, such as the below image of him on a bike. Seriously, he shares some fun personal stuff on there as well as some “out-there” music.
Taylor Swift (Tumblr)
Yeah, Taylor Swift is on this list (that’s twice now!). Taylor Swift is all over social media, but her Tumblr is something special. She’ll write about what’s on her mind, share videos or pictures from her life, or even chat with fans on there. So despite her management team trying to create an impenetrable brand around her, she remains down-to-earth and approachable.
Maybe we can call Ryan Adams and My Morning Jacket bassist Tom Blankenship “the cat couple”. Tom posts quite a few pictures of his cat, Blanket, as well as some really cool photos from the 15+ year history of My Morning Jacket. Tom’s a witty guy and isn’t afraid to field questions from fans, no matter how strange they may be.

There’s no denying that the Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne is a weird dude. I can’t even begin count the times he’s gotten banned from various social media for some of the crazy things he tries to get away with. His social media accounts are a window into his strange world (although the pic below is pretty straightforward).
