In their thirteen years of existence, Iceage have emerged as arguably the preeminent post-punk band on the planet. From their eponymous debut EP in 2009 to their landmark 2018 album,  Beyondless, Elias Bender Rønnenfelt (vocals/lyrics), Jakob Tvilling Pless (bass), Johan Wieth (guitar), Casper Morilla (guitar), and Dan Kjær Nielsen (drums) have consistently rattled the walls that surround us and the very pillars of our society. The Copenhagen quartet have never shied away from tackling difficult issues such as mental illness, nor sharing their views about how society is crumbling under the weight of capitalism. As a result, they’re not just the best band in their genre; they are also one of the most important bands of the 21st century. Where some bands hide behind love-stricken tunes, Iceage tell stories about confronting our biggest fears and the enemies who incite them.

They demonstrated their courageousness on the dark and brooding “The Holding Hand”, which they shared earlier in the month. The song was their first with Mexican Summer, and it sparked rumors that their fifth LP was coming very soon. Sure enough, yesterday they announced that Seek Shelter will arrive May 7th. Accompanying the unveiling was another single that further evidences why Iceage has no comparable.

“Vendetta” is lightning in a bottle. The post-punk aesthetics remain, but the band head more into an anthemic, space-rock realm to tell their story. The result is a groovy, trippy, and spellbinding experience worthy of hypnotic dancing. Through the hallucinatory haze, Rønnenfelt’s piercing voice emerges. In his trademark fashion, he poetically yet graphically describes how Western culture is governed by violence. For anyone to get ahead, whether in politics or work or even in social settings, people must be prepared to “cock the hammer, tuck it in” because “every man is someone’s successor”. We’re all expendable in this great game of life, and those who get ahead play by their own rules. And for more than a decade, Iceage have been doing just that.

Seek Shelter is available for pre-order / pre-save here or go directly to Bandcamp.
